Acrylic pouring is not a new technique. It was originated in the 1930s by Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros. He called it “accidental painting”. Some other names for acrylic pouring include fluid art, fluid painting, and pour painting. As the name implies, it is done with acrylic paint. Acrylics are a water-based paint, NOT oil-based. I use fine artists’ acrylic paints, student grade paints, craft paints, or even house paints, as long as they are water-based (water-based house paint is also called latex paint). Basically, art is created by mixing acrylic paints with a pouring medium (PM) to make the paints more fluid and easier to manipulate. The paint is then applied to a chosen surface and moved in various ways to create the desired effect. Different techniques are used to achieve each effect.
